Plastic-Free July at the Hub
Saturday 5 – Friday 18 July, Lewes Climate Hub, 32 High Street, Lewes, BN7 2LU
Celebrate national Plastic-Free July with ideas, activities, discussion and the launch of our town-wide “Fight for your Right to Refill’ campaign to continue the fight against single-use plastic pollution.
Fight for Your Right to Refill
Did you know it’s been estimated that around 21 million items of single-use plastic are used and thrown away in Lewes (and often ending up at Newhaven Incinerator) each year. That’s over 400,000 items being chucked away every week – or 40 items every minute!
That’s why Lewes Climate Hub is launching a campaign to encourage everyone to fight for their right to refill – whether it’s to refill a reusable takeaway coffee cup at cafes, support shops that allow you to refill your own containers with produce – or championing outlets like Harvey’s, which offers a ‘refill and return’ service for beer!
Look out for the “Fight for Your Right to Refill’ sign – featuring Lewes’ adopted son Thomas Paine – at shops around town and drop into Lewes Climate Hub for lots of ideas to help cut the plastic.
If you’d like your shop, business or organisation to be part of the “Fight for your right to refill” campaign, email

Talk: Getting drastic on plastic with Lisa Thomson
Saturday 12 July, 1pm-2.30pm, FREE
As part of Plastic-Free July, we welcome Lisa Thomson of the Greenpeace Speakers Network to talk all things plastic!
Come and test your knowledge of single-use plastics in the Big Plastics Quiz. Discover how and why it was invented, how it’s affecting our wildlife, our planet, and even our own health.
We’ll also find out what’s happening to the plastic we ‘recycle’ here in the UK – does it really go where we think it does? Plus, the UN Global Plastics Treaty, which is currently being negotiated to reduce worldwide production and consumption of plastic – can it really help turn the tide on plastic pollution?
