All change book

Worth reading: All Change! Lewes Bus Station

This timely new book tells the story of Lewes bus station through good times and bad, from its opening in 1954 to its current closure. It is copiously illustrated  and full of reminiscences, anecdotes and quotes that all contribute to this lively account of a well-loved, iconic Lewes landmark.

Published by Lewes History Group, ‘All Change! Lewes Bus Station’ shows how essential the bus station was as a public transport hub. In the 70 years since the bus station was built by Southdown, the local bus company of the time, it has been affected by the twists and turns of contrasting political ideology and shifting economics. The cycle through nationalisation and subsequent privatisation of the bus industry has predictably led to the asset stripping of the public realm.

At a time when buses have come to the forefront of popular discourse, with the advent of a prime minister who champions public transport, there are many in the town who would like to argue for the bus station site being restored to its previous public function. The book reflects the strength of feeling among staff and passengers for this place where people could meet, eat and greet and shelter from the elements while they waited for their bus.
