‘Thank You’ from Lewes Community Fridge
Lewes Community Fridge, which is open at Lewes Town Hall every Saturday morning, is now two years old. It has diverted 936 kilos of fresh food and produce from being wasted, thanks to the sterling efforts of volunteers, Lewes businesses and generous local residents, as fridge volunteer Stewart Graham-Hyde explains.
Lewes Community Fridge is over two years old now and we have built up quite a community of patrons and volunteers and worked with other local community champions to put on events. All of this would not be possible without the businesses, local initiatives and members of the public who donate surplus food to our community fridge in the first place.
By doing this they are ensuring less good food goes to waste. So, this article is to say a massive ‘THANK YOU’… to everyone who helps fight food waste. Please give it up for the companies, local community groups, and (although we can’t name you all) everyone who brings and donates surplus food to our community fridge.
In an ideal world, all food would get eaten, but unfortunately the reality is that somewhere in the region of 60 per cent of all food produced in the UK goes to waste. We and many other organisations are working to reduce this. In the meantime, we will continue to endeavour to collect as much surplus food as possible, ensure it is redistributed to the community – and stop it ending up in the bin!
A massive thank-you to….
