Join the Lewes Swift Surveying Team

Lewes Swift Supporters is looking to expand its team of surveyors reporting on Swift behaviour in town this Spring and Summer. This includes reporting on the number of Swifts seen in an allotted area, nest entries or exits, and a description or photograph of the site.

Surveyors are asked to record any Swift behaviour in their area on at least two evenings a month during May, June and July then send a report back to Lewes Swift Supporters on a simple Excel sheet, which is provided. This is added to the group’s annual data, which has been built up over the past six years.

Audrey Jarvis of Lewes Swift Supporters says: “Swift surveying helps us to discover where Swifts are nesting so that we can protect those sites from future development and help the colony to expand by installing nest boxes nearby. This is important because one of the challenges for these red-listed birds is a loss of their traditional nest spaces under the eaves and in nooks and crannies in older buildings.”

No previous experience is required. Lewes Swift Supporters will let you know the sites where Swifts have been seen in previous years and accompany on your first survey and give you any further training needed.
