Greenpeace Lewes – What’s happening in April and beyond
A round-up of campaigns and events taking place locally or nationally that you can get involved in as part of Greenpeace Lewes.
Power to the people!
The Great Gas Rip Off campaign started by Greenpeace nationally last Autumn is yielding results. The government has lowered the energy price cap on bills, as of 1 April,as a result of much lobbying, and the growing awareness that UK utility bills are too high. A call for more renewables to be installed nationally has also resulted in a recent announcement that plug-in solar panels will now be permitted and available in three months; 1.5 m plug-in solar panels are already in use in Germany on balconies, as an illustration of how they can be used. Further, from 2028, new homes need not be connected to the gas grid. We must all continue to press government to decouple the price of electricity from the marginal cost of gas!
Greenpeace has now included the Great Gas Rip Off campaign, which continues in those areas not holding local /County Council Elections, into its Power for the People campaign this year. Where there are local elections on 7 May 2026 (as in Lewes) Greenpeace stalls and posters will encourage everyone to vote with its new Vote for Climate campaign.
Traditionally there is a low voter turnout for local elections so please do not waste your vote! Greenpeace is encouraging every voter to bear in mind the climate stance of their candidates or that of the candidate’s party. Do you want more fossil fuels hiking prices or do you want cheaper renewables? Do not believe the narrative that renewables are more expensive! Small margins can shift local elections, so you do have power to sway the election result, and the energy direction in this country. PLEASE VOTE FOR CLIMATE ON 7 MAY 2026.
