End The Great Gas Rip-Off with Greenpeace

Debbie Annells of Greenpeace Lewes introduces a new nationwide campaign demanding an electricity pricing system that isn’t rigged unfairly in favour of gas and that allows clean British power to deliver lower, more stable energy bills.

The UK electricity pricing system is unfairly rigged in favour of the gas industry, keeping its prices and profits high and sending our energy bills through the roof.

It’s estimated that UK households and businesses pay over £5billion per year too much because of this unfair electricity pricing system. (The Power Shift consultancy calculated this figure in their recent report for Greenpeace.)

So even though we’re producing more renewable energy every year in the UK, we still allow volatile gas, not cheaper wind and solar, to set the price we pay for power. In short, the gas industry is ripping us all off.!

So what’s the solution?

  • We need the government to take more control of gas-fired power stations and make sure they’re run for public benefit, not private profit. That way clean British power will give us lower, more stable energy bills and protect our way of life in the UK from climate change as we get off gas.
  • We also need the government to decouple the electricity pricing system from the marginal gas price! This will reduce your household bills, which the government has pledged to do!

How are we highlighting the issue?

Greenpeace Lewes are writing articles (like this one) and running stalls to raise awareness of these issues, encouraging everyone to put pressure on the government to change the price mechanism for electricity to something fairer.

Other grassroots activities include putting up posters, bus stop takeovers, media coverage and an online presence, inspiring as many people as possible to take action and join our movement.

As a first step, why not sign the petition on this QR code below to let the government know what you think about the current state of electricity pricing:greenpeace qr

Together, we can put real pressure on politicians to make the changes we need – so that clean British power can give us lower and more stable energy bills, cut carbon, and end the Great Gas Rip-Off for good.
