Come on a New Year Plant Hunt!
Sunday 29 December 2024, 10.30am to 12 noon, FREE. Meet at the junction of The Gallops and Nevill Road, next to Lewes Prison (What3Words: visa.folds.tests)
Join Jan Knowlson, Biodiversity Officer for South Downs National Park, Lewes Climate Hub and Wildflower Lewes for a New Year Plant Hunt across Landport Bottom. The hunt will involve a gentle 90-minute walk, stopping along the way to record any wild or naturalised plants in bloom in the middle of winter.
The team will be reporting its combined results to the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland. The society’s website shares ‘spotter sheets’ for information on the flowers you might find and a downloadable app to record them. Download both here: New Year Plant Hunt – Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland
The photographs show some of the flowers the team spotted on the New Year Plant Hunt last year in Lewes Cemetery: Hawkbit, Scabious and Speedwell.
Everyone is welcome – come on your own or with family or friends. (The pink cross on the picture below shows where to meet.) Dress warmly with footwear suitable for crossing damp, uneven ground. No previous experience or plant knowledge is necessary.
