Family Tree-Planting Day: Come and help plant 400 trees!

Sunday 1 December, 10am-4pm, Laughton Greenwood, Keeper’s Gate, Park Lane, East Sussex, BN8 6JH. FREE but please sign up here

Come and help with Laughton Greenwood’s most ambitious tree-planting day yet, with a goal to plant up to 400 saplings in this beautiful and ancient community woodland – one of the only community-run woods in Sussex. Steve Lewis, chair of Laughton Greenwood explains more.

Sunday 1 December is your day to plant trees in our beautiful local countryside. Volunteers will be planting up to 400 saplings in the wood, which is just beyond Ringmer, and lots of help is needed.

Why plant trees?

With the climate crisis causing floods and wildfires around the world it is easy to feel powerless. That’s why planting trees is such a great thing to do. They store carbon, so are one of the most effective ways to tackle the climate crisis.

Trees provide a haven for birds and butterflies. And as long as the wood remains in community hands the trees we plant now will be there for our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to play among and enjoy.

What’s in store

The Family Tree Planting Day will be attended by our MP and local councillors. There will be pre-Christmas activities for children with art and crafts. Volunteers should prepare for the December weather, with warm, waterproof clothing, sturdy footwear, drinks and snacks (there will be soup at lunchtime). If you can bring a spade please do, but the most important thing is to just come along!

All are welcome, including children and well-behaved dogs, and no experience is needed. Sessions begin at 10am and 1pm, or just come when you can. The day is free but please sign up online at Ticketsource here so we can prepare for numbers.

Grow our woodland cover

One of the best things about living in Sussex is that we are surrounded by lovely countryside. But hedgerows have been cut down all over the country and habitats for our natural wildlife are shrinking. The UK has only 14% of woodland cover, whereas most of Europe has over 30%.

So come and join in on Sunday 1 December to plant some trees for our wildlife and for future generations. Get more details on Facebook, or www.laughtongreenwood.co.uk, or email us at
