Lewes Urban Arboretum in action
The tree-planting season has started and the Lewes Urban Arboretum team have swung into action, planting 11 native trees with a further 25 planned. If there’s any site in Lewes that you think would benefit from tree-planting – now’s the time to get in contact as team member Audrey Jarvis explains.
The Lewes Urban Arboretum team has begun the tree-planting season by planting 11 native Hornbeam trees in Lewes (one of only two places in the country officially designated as ‘arboretum towns’!) These new trees continue from the line of 11 disease-resistant Elms that the team planted in Prince Charles Road last year and will provide a welcome landmark at the entrance to Lewes.
Later in the season, we will be planting another 25 trees in Malling, at sites suggested by residents. To plan for diversity and resilience to our changing climate, the collection will include a mixture of native trees, (Oak, Alder, and Field Maple), and exotic species, (Pin Oak, Persian Ironwood, and Oriental Plane).
Worth watching: Audrey and her acorn
To mark National Tree Week in November, the Railway Land Wildlife Trust has been celebrating the wonderful stories behind some of the trees on the Railway Land nature reserve in Lewes – including an oak that started life as a humble acorn planted by Lewes Urban Arboretum’s Audrey Jarvis and local school children 15 years ago.
