Welcome our new partner group: Lewes Stand Up To Racism
Lewes Climate Hub is delighted to welcome Lewes Stand up to Racism as our latest partner group and look forward to working together. Nic Watts explains why it’s now urgent for anti-racism and climate campaigners to join forces.
The climate crisis disproportionately affects forcibly displaced people. It is an escalating injustice, making life harder for millions forced to flee their homes, whether because of war, poverty or indeed the physical effects of climate change such as drought, rising sea levels or extreme weather.
With the UK Far Right increasingly focused on denying climate change in mainstream media as well as through newspapers distributed locally such as The Light, anti-racism campaigners have every interest in joining forces with climate campaigners.
We are therefore delighted to have affiliated to Lewes Climate Hub and look forward to making new contacts and building new networks as we look to protect our communities.
What we do
Stand Up to Racism is a UK-wide organisation that campaigns against racism, fascism, Islamophobia and anti-semitism. The Lewes group is new – we formed in August following the defeat of the summer “Farage riots” by mass gatherings of people all over the country.
Lewes District Council, at our request, issued a statement of solidarity with Southport Council and the community of Southport after the horrific stabbings of children and the subsequent diabolical riots there. We also joined the Brighton counter-protest on 7 August.
Since then, we have organised a Love Music Hate Racism gig opened by Cllr Imogen Makepeace, Mayor of Lewes and attended at our invitation by Lewes Football Club players and club officials.
We have organised a vigil for those killed trying to cross the Channel. We hold fortnightly Saturday stalls on Cliffe Bridge to coincide with the Lewes Farmers Market.
Stifling the Reform UK vote
Right now, a big focus for us is stifling the Reform UK vote in May’s County Council elections. We have a huge campaign planned, including leafleting every home in the locality. This will require lots of help – if you’d like get involved, do email us at
And finally for a bit of fun – and to help raise much-needed funds – we are holding a pub quiz at The Black Horse, Lewes on Sunday 12 January. We’d love to see you there!
