Harvest Feast feeds over 100 with surplus produce!

Big congratulations to Lewes Community Fridge and the Community Chef for hosting a four-course Harvest Feast for over 100 people at Lewes Town Hall in October, using donated and surplus produce. Lewes Community Fridge volunteer Stewart Graham-Hyde explains more and how you can help support the Fridge.
The Lewes Harvest Feast took place at Lewes Town Hall on Sunday 13 October and was a huge success. Hosted by Lewes Community Fridge and the Community Chef plus a fantastic team of volunteers, Lewes Town Mayor Imogen Makepeace welcomed visitors to our event at the Corn Exchange.
Guests were treated to a seasonal four-course Sunday lunch of delicious food all made from surplus and donated produce, and all served at the tables by our wonderful volunteers.
We asked that visitors make a donation when they booked their tickets for the event and as a result, we raised over £500 which will go into helping fund the event and supporting the community fridge. Conversations are already being had about the next one….
Please join us in a HUGE THANK YOU!!! to all our volunteers, supporters, Community Chef CIC, The Seasons, The Field, Ashurst Organics, Lewes Food Partnership, Lewes Climate Hub, Flint Owl, Ringmer Community Orchard and Lewes Town Council.

Who are we and what do we do?
Lewes Community Fridge was started two years ago by a group of like-minded volunteers who were concerned about all things environmental, which of course includes food waste. In the UK alone 25 per cent of all food produced goes to waste. We obtain surplus food from local businesses and individuals that would otherwise go to waste. We have an outlet (Lewes Town Hall Kitchen, accessible from Market Lane) with a fridge and freezer, where we can store fresh produce and baked goods, and freeze what we need. We open the community fridge every Saturday morning from 10.30am to 12 midday and everyone is welcome to visit and take some food free of charge.
We are not a food bank but work closely with food banks, as much of our work helps to support those most in need. Everything we collect and redistribute is within its best before, or use by date, and is sometimes frozen on the day we collect for it to be preserved and redistributed. Community fridges are becoming an essential part of food security for many people worldwide, there are over 200 community fridges in the UK alone.
Would you like to help?
Donate: In the UK 65% of all food waste comes from our homes. If you have surplus food in the back of your cupboards or your fridge that you can get to the community fridge we will ensure it does not get wasted. You can donate food by contacting us at our email below and we will make arrangements with you to drop off your surplus.
Volunteer: We are always looking for new volunteers, we have a team of people which we would be happy to welcome you to. Currently we collect food on a Friday evening, and open on Saturday morning. If you have time and would like to volunteer please email us and we’ll be in touch.
