Fitzjohns Community Food becomes a Climate Hub Partner
We are delighted to welcome Fitzjohns Community Food as a partner group to Lewes Climate Hub, joining around 50 other local groups and organisations. Co-ordinator Ruby Makepeace-Somerville explains why climate action is becoming increasingly important to their work.
Fitzjohns Community Food are pleased to become a partner of Lewes Climate Hub. We support our community to access more food, prioritising fresh healthy produce as much as possible.
This includes our Community Cafe ,which makes nutritious healthy meals every week. As well as offering delicious & nutritious food to anyone who needs it, the café aims to provide a friendly and welcoming space to sit back and relax, a place to learn skills and volunteer, and a place that shows the importance of community.
We also run ‘Food Pop-Ups’ at Wallands Primary School and at Christ Church in the Nevill Estate, helping to reduce food waste.
We are very aware of the impact climate change is having on the quality, cost and availability of food and especially so for those that are facing financial hardship (both globally and locally). This year, a focus for us has been reducing the amount we spend at the supermarkets, instead prioritising purchasing from local wholesalers and suppliers, where the farmers get a much better deal.
We look forward to working with Lewes Climate Hub on issues around social and environmental justice, and showcasing what can be done with surplus food and the power of communities eating and sharing food together.
