City Nature Challenge Walk

Sunday 28 April, 10am, Southerham Lane, Lewes – Lewes Golf Course – Lewes Town Centre

Join Jan Knowlson from the South Downs National Park on a Sunday walk in Lewes as part of a worldwide citizen science event to discover and record as much wildlife as possible over one weekend. No specialist expertise required!

iNaturalist is an online global social network of people sharing biodiversity information to help each other learn about nature. Every year iNaturalist supports a Global City Nature Challenge to record as much nature as possible over a weekend at the end of April. This year, the Challenge is taking place on 26-29 April. Sussex’s Living Coast Biosphere takes part in the Global City Nature Challenge every year across Brighton and the Eastern Downs (see more on its involvement here).

As part of this, Jan Knowlson from the South Downs National Park will lead a walk to record nature across one part of Lewes. The walk will begin at Southerham Lane in Lewes (where the South Downs National Park worked with the landowner to create a pollinator haven). It will then loop across Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Southerham Nature Reserve, up to Lewes Golf Club and back down Chapel Hill to Lewes Town.

The group will be stopping to record anything they see as they go, so it will be a gently-paced walk.

How you can join in

This is an opportunity to see the beautiful countryside around Lewes, learn how to record wildlife and take part in an exciting, worldwide ‘citizen science’ event!

You don’t need any experience to take part – Jan and her team will provide all the guidance you need. Before coming along, it will save a lot of time if you download the iNaturalist app and create an account here.

There will be a few steep climbs and uneven terrain, so do wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water and snacks!
